The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is an internationally known tourist spot, and attracts a large number of tourists each year; as a result, the peaceful mountain has been polluted and air quality is suffering. In order to sustain the beauty of the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, reduce air pollution, and develop the tourism economy, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Forestry Bureau, a local traffic company, and a domestic electric bus manufacturer have worked together to implement the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area Electric Medium Bus Intelligent EV Pilot Project. The project put 10 electric buses on roads to serve tourists in April of 2015, applying the features of EV-quietness, low carbon emissions, and no diesel smell to providing the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area with a more appealing atmosphere. The end result is to achieve a win-win situation of environmental protection and economic development.
The 10 electric buses in the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area were made by a local company, and the localization rate of parts and components is high. These buses have run at high altitudes, in high-moisture and low-temperature environments since April of 2015. Moreover, they have carried more than 2.4 million visitors, and their total mileage is more than 350,000 kilometers, with 100% availability. These numbers show that the quality of domestic electric buses is stable and superior.
Jiacheng Traffic Company, which participated in the project, pays the royalties and provides disadvantaged members of society with free transportation service. It also takes part in local charity activities, offering job opportunities to local residents. The electric bus project creates a triple win for the people, the company, and the government, and it is also evidence of the successful inter-departmental cooperation between the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Forestry Bureau.
Taiwan’s government has been actively promoting green industry, with the objective of reducing carbon emissions while developing the economy at the same time. It attempts to take advantage of Taiwan’s ICT (information and communications technology) industry, a sufficient electricity supply, and a moderate landform for EV. It plans to develop an intelligent EV industry and launched the Intelligent EV Pilot Run Project, verifying the use of different EVs in multiple scenarios. The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area Electric Medium Bus Intelligent EV Pilot Project is a model for developing the economy and reducing carbon emissions at the same time, and has established the foundation for Taiwan’s policy of launching 10,000 electric buses within 10 years.
