Green technology collaboration for new growth opportunities
Organization: Industrial Development Bureau, MOEA        Publish Date: 2016-11-29 10:24
In order to assist Taiwan’s manufacturing in adapting to global green and environmental protection trends, the “Project for Promoting Industrial Green Growth” was implemented in 2013 by the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), Ministry of Economic Affairs in order to provide guidance on green innovation. Through the program, 173 companies have been assisted in promoting green growth, and the economic result achieved is estimated to be NT$6.34 billion, with environmental benefits including energy savings of 91,000 kiloliters of oil equivalent (kLOE), and a carbon reduction of 536,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e).

One of the most important ways to promote green innovation is to encourage multidisciplinary collaboration of technologies to facilitate the development of new green partnerships and models. For instance, the IDB, in promoting the integration of ICT with pollution treatment and control technologies, creates more efficient industrial process control. This not only reduces the risk of pollution and resource consumption, but also creates new business opportunities and competitive advantages.

The IDB also provides design solutions of green products to manufacturers with innovative ideas and circular economy concepts, such as implementing product material saving, packaging material improvement, and green material replacement during the product development stage. In one case of providing assistance on using alternative raw materials, a body care product manufacturer replaced the raw materials of plastic containers with rice bran in order to make the containers biodegradable. This successfully created new value for the product with green design.

According to the IDB, the domestic industry has a robust R&D capability for innovative technologies and a strong foundation in the manufacturing process. If we can link up the technical expertise of various parties and expand the application value of green technology collaboration, it will bring about new economic opportunities and become the new growth energy of the future.
