Former Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was chosen to head the European Council for a second term during a summit on Mar. 9, 2017, despite opposition from the Polish government.

During the spring summit meeting, EU leaders voted 27-1 in favor of appointing Tusk to another two-and-a-half-year term.

Tusk said on Twitter that he was grateful for the trust and positive assessment by the council. "I will do my best to make the EU better," he wrote.

Poland opposed the reappointment of Tusk, a former PM from a rival party, insisting that he had violated his mandate by interfering in domestic politics.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel offered her public support in a pre-summit speech to lawmakers in Berlin. "I see the re-election of Donald Tusk as a sign of stability for the entire EU," she said.
