[Statement of Clarification] BSMI urges consumers to correctly use internet-connected television to prevent privacy invasion BSMI, MOEA March 11, 2017
Organization: Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection, M.O.E.A., R.O.C.        Publish Date: 2017-05-15 15:02
With regard to media reports dated March 10, 2017 about hackers being able to remotely access internet-connected television in "fake-off" mode and record user's daily conversation, the response of the Bureau of Standard, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) is as follows:

1)Television and set top box are subject to mandatory inspection by BSMI. Inspection items include EMC and electrical safety. Internet-connected television commodities that fail to pass the inspection cannot be imported nor put on the market.

2)Internet-connected television allows users to switch between normal television viewing and computer function through built-in internet connectivity. Although connected television offers smart functions such as video conferencing and internet shopping, its security is not as secure as that of computers and smart devices. Internet-connected television is prone to hacking and privacy invasion. The BSMI urges users of internet-connected television to follow the following guidelines to prevent privacy invasion.
1)Turn off the television and set top box when not in use.
2)Protect the device with current security software.
3)Use the password function and change the password frequently.
4)Avoid accessing unsafe site and opening suspicious messages.

3)To eliminate doubts about the security and safety of internet-connected television, the BSMI will enhance import and factory inspections as well as conduct market surveillance. Should doubts concerning connection, network communication and security arise, the BSMI will work with relevant agencies to clear doubts.
