Revision of mobile charger standard to enhance convenience, energy-saving efforts and environmental sustainability BSMI, MOEA July 25, 2017
Organization: Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection, M.O.E.A., R.O.C.        Publish Date: 2017-10-03 16:09
In response to the rapid development of intelligent terminal devices like cell phones, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has revised the CNS 15285 "General requirements and test methods for chargers used by mobile terminals and other hand-held ICT devices".

The BSMI announced on July 14, 2017 that the revision includes the expansion of scope to cover chargers for more information and communication products, the addition of USB Type C specifications, the downward revision of standby power consumption to 1/10 of the original requirement and new environmental requirements.

In view of the popularity of mobile devices and Internet of Things devices, the revision has expanded the scope of chargers to include chargers for cellphones, tablet PCs, multimedia players, digital cameras, wireless headphones and other handheld devices. Meanwhile, the inclusion of standardized USB Type C charging specification can meet the demand of fast charging and high speed data transmission, enhancing the interchangeability of chargers. Also, the standby power of charger is greatly reduced from 0.3 W to 0.03 W to cut down standby power consumption. Last but not least, the revision includes ecosystem requirements and ecosystem design guidelines aimed to reduce pollution, encourage recycle/reuse awareness and increase the environmental efficiency of chargers.

The BSMI will continue to survey the development and trend in international standard and ICT technology and establish or revise national standard as appropriate. For more information, please visit the CNS Online Service web site at http://www.cnsonline.com.tw.
