2022 Taiwan Japan Investment Forum Resumes Post Pandemic
Japan is Taiwan`s fourth largest investor. In order to encourage Japanese businesses to ramp up investments in Taiwan, the MOEA partnered with Mizuho Bank to host the 2022 Taiwan Japan Investment Forum on November 22. MOEA Minister Mei-Hua Wang delivered opening remarks at the forum, and TSMC, MediaTek, and Episil Technologies were invited to share the latest developments in semiconductor technology.
Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Deputy Representative Takashi Hattori, Chairman Takuya Mihira of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Taipei, and President of SEMI Taiwan Terry Tsao were all invited to attend. President and CEO Masahiko Kato of Mizuho Bank also joined in the forum online. The forum received, either in person or online, over 420 executive-level managers from various Taiwanese and Japanese companies. Directors from Shin-Etsu Handotai Taiwan Co., Ltd., Tokyo Electron, Canon Semiconductor Equipment Taiwan, Inc., Mitsui Chemicals, and Mitsubishi Electric all attended the forum in person, and several Japanese CEOs also attended the event online.
In her opening remarks, MOEA Minister Wang referenced the close economic and trade ties between Taiwan and Japan, citing the common presence of Japanese businesses in Taiwan. The monetary value of investments from Japanese businesses have more than doubled this year compared to the same period last year, underscoring the confidence that Japanese businesses hold for the future of Taiwan`s economy. The MOEA also values technological collaborations with Japanese industries, as at the end of August, it led the first overseas delegation of the year to Japan. A robust partnership exists between Taiwan and Japan in the fields of semiconductors, EVs, and 5G IoTs. In the future, there is great potential for collaboration in process equipment, materials, and key components.
President and CEO Masahiko Kato of Mizuho Bank also highlighted in his online remarks that at the moment, Taiwan`s wafer foundries account for 60% of global production. As such, Taiwan`s semiconductor industry is of global concern and importance, and a complementary relationship exists between the industry supply chains between Taiwan and Japan. Therefore, all bilateral cooperation will hold positive significance whether for the economy or security.
The forum marks the most important investment cooperation and exchange since Taiwan and Japan both opened up their borders. The MOEA shall continue to forge greater connections between Taiwan and Japan industries through more diverse platforms, furnishing greater opportunities for Japanese businesses to invest in Taiwan.
