Organization: Department of International Cooperation        Publish Date: 2018-03-30 10:22
The ornamental aquarium industry is global in nature. According to U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization statistics, more than 100 countries trade in ornamental fish and other aquatic organisms, up from just 28 in 1976. An estimated 10,000 species are traded on the world market.

More than one billion ornamental fish are traded every year, with freshwater species accounting for about 85 percent of the total. Most freshwater ornamental fish for export are produced using artificial propagation and breeding methods, while most seawater ornamental fish are wild caught.

The top ten exporting nations are Singapore, Spain, Japan, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Israel and the United States. The top ten importers are the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Japan, Singapore, Israel, the Netherlands, France, Hong Kong and Italy.

Major ornamental fish species include goldfish and koi, with mainland China and Japan being leading exporters of both. In addition to ornamental fish, the sector also includes invertebrates such as corals and crustaceans, marine plants, and other aquatic organisms.
