Taiwan-Czech Republic Economic Consultations achieves positive outcomes

The 3rd Taiwan-Czech Republic Economic Consultations was held on June 19 in Prague at the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade and was co-chaired by Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Mei-Hua Wang and Czech Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Vladimir Bartl.

In her opening remarks, Vice Minister Wang stated that since the first Consultations was held in the Czech capital in 2016, implementation of the resolutions reached by both parties in various areas, such as trade, investment, industry, innovative R&D, and smart city cooperation, has helped to foster closer ties between the two sides.

This year's meeting achieved many positive outcomes in the expanded range of topics discussed, including cooperation on energy, transportation, circular economy, cybersecurity, Industry 4.0, and tourism, to name a few. In addition, both sides agreed to step up exchanges on smart machinery, smart grids, railway system construction, innovation, and circular economy in order to unearth and tap potential commercial opportunities through partnerships.

One area in which enterprises and research organizations of the two sides have engaged in significant fruitful collaboration is in R&D under the Czech Republic's DELTA Program. During the Consultations, the Czech side pointed to the example of the collaborative development of a jet weaving machine for production of 3D fabrics as one of the most successful projects under the DELTA Program.

In recent years, economic, trade and investment interactions between Taiwan and the Czech Republic have continued to grow stronger. The Czech Republic currently ranks as Taiwan's third largest trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe. More than 30 Taiwanese enterprises have set up operations in the country, with their total investment amounting to about US$1.1 billion.
