WTO lowers global trade forecast

The World Trade Organization has cut the outlook for global commerce through 2019, warning that tension between major trading partners increasingly threatens economic growth.

Growth in global trade in goods will slow to 3.9 percent this year and 3.7 percent next year, compared with 4.7 percent in 2017, the WTO said in a revised forecast released Sept. 27. This past April, the WTO forecast trade would grow by 4.4 percent in 2018 and 4 percent in 2019.

Increasing trade tensions pose the largest risk, but monetary policy tightening and associated financial volatility may also destabilize trade and output, the WTO director-general said in statement on the day of revised forecast's announcement.
