BSMI establishes national standard for inflatable play equipment BSMI, MOEA August 15, 2018
Organization: Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection, M.O.E.A., R.O.C.        Publish Date: 2019-01-09 11:18
Inflatable play equipment comes in different designs and is loved by children of all ages. To ensure play safety, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has established CNS 20187 "Inflatable play equipment - Safety requirements and test methods" after referencing ISO standards.

The BSMI said inflatable play equipment that is often seen in children's events is not fixed to the ground and can be moved from place to place. CNS 20187 can help prevent injuries resulting from accidents and serve as a guideline for local authorities to follow. The main points of CNS 20187 are as follows:

1) The standard applies to inflatable play equipment intended for use by children between 2 and 12 years of age. The number of users is determined by inflatable play equipment properties. The manufacturer or supplier must provide evaluation information, including the size of the playing area, type of activity involved, the inflated shapes and entrance/exit, and the user's height.

2) Materials: The materials used must be flame retardant and strong enough to sustain the weight of users. Hazardous substances such as like lead must not be used.

3) Anchorage: The maximum wind-speed in which inflatables can be used outdoors is 38 km/h, which equates to Force 5 on the Beaufort Scale (when small trees in leaf start to sway). The number of anchor-points should be at least six and should be calculated independently for each side. The anchor-points must be distributed around the perimeter of the inflatable.

4) Prevent the body and clothing from being trapped: Detectors should be used to inspect the structure to prevent the head, finger, hair, body and clothing from being trapped in the inflatable.

5) Containing walls: When the platform on which the user stands measures 0.6 m above ground, walls should be installed to prevent the user from falling out.

6) Blowers: The blowers should be fenced off and not be readily accessible to the public.

7) The manufacturer or supplier must provide the following information:

7.1) General information: ground surface requirements, intended age range or height range, number of users allowed.

7.2) Installation information: method of anchorage, number of anchor points, maximum safe wind speed, maximum allowable slop of the site.

8) Supervision: The equipment must not be operated without the presence of operators and attendants. The number of trained operators and attendants and their capability should be assessed.
