A new age of Circular Economy exchanges between Taiwan and Japan

In order to promote exchanges between Taiwan and Japan on circular economy issues, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs held the Taiwan-Japan International Conference on Promotion of the Circular Economy on September 16, 2019, inviting five Japanese experts to interact and create a new age of circular economy exchanges between Taiwan and Japan.
At the beginning of the conference, Jang-hwa Leu, the Director General of the Industrial Development Bureau, gave an opening speech to welcome all the participants. Yen-shiang Shih, Chairman of Sustainable & Circular economy Development Association, and Ando Haruhiko, Vice Chairman of the Research Institute of Economic, Trade and Industry (RIETI) also gave welcome speeches. Dr. Tien-jin Chang, a professor at the National Taipei University of Technology, chaired the conference.
In the first session, concerning the trends and technology of circular economy development, Dr. Eiji Hosoda, chairman of the Circular Economy Vision Committee of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, shared the current status and development of the circular economy in Japan. Dr. Shinsuke Murakami, Professor of the University of Tokyo School of Engineering, shared the situation of resource recovery of metals in Japan and analyzed the subsequent development.
In the second session, on the development of the circular economy business model, local expert Chieh-hsin Wu, Chairman of Super Dragon Technology Co., Ltd, shared how to recycle e-waste. Tung-jung Sung, a consultant of the Taiwan Design Center, conveyed how to reverse the image of wastes by circular design. Two Japanese experts also gave their presentation. Sumiyuki Nakadai, President of the Nakadai Corporation, shared how to realize the commercialization of circular society with marketing. Kazutaka Ohashi, Director of Open A Firms (THROWBACK), explained how to re-design wastes with new applications and benefits to create innovative design space.
The conference was a big success. All 150 participants from industry, government, and research institutes obtained a great deal of valuable information via the conference. The Industrial Development Bureau hopes to establish a communication channel between Taiwan and Japan to exchange ideas on policy promotion and industrial cooperation related to the circular economy through this activity, aiming to pursue resource recovery and sustainable development of the industry.
