Taiwan's Innovative Technologies Shine at 2019 R&D 100 Awards

The R&D 100 Awards has announced its 2019 winners, which include four government - sponsored research organizations of the following: ITRI's RAIBA - Reconfigurable and Regulatable Battery Array System and the bionic knobby magnetic beads manufacturing technology iKNOBEADS; TTRI's DIFA; III's Digital Twin Solutions for Smart Farming; MIRDC's Bionic Intelligent AGV Fleet System. Other 2019 R&D 100 Awards winners include the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, NASA, and Argonne National Laboratory.

1. iKNOBEADS / Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)

Immunotherapies are now commonly used for the treatment of cancer. T cell activity in immune cells decreases from age, thereby reducing their effectiveness in fighting cancer. At present, all commercially available magnetic beads are spherical in shape. ITRI's magnetic beads, however, have a unique knobby morphology, which creates a larger surface area that can enhance interaction with T cells, leading to T cell expansion by a factor of 100, and enabling the resting T cells to become more active and efficient in fighting cancer. Only one-third the number of iKNOBEADS are needed, in comparison with conventional magnetic beads, and the iKNOBEADS can increase the number of T cells 100-fold, offering more effective cancer therapy.

2. Bionic Intelligent AGV Fleet System / Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC)

AGV solves transportation issues arising from the lack of simultaneous cooperation between vehicles, and for vehicles used for fixed routes and guided by magnetic tracks. The AGV is equipped with 360-degree mobile omnidirectional wheel design architecture that is used to overcome the restrictions of narrow spaces, with the possibility of controlling several automatically guided vehicles simultaneously to carry out transportation tasks. It is a great tool for Industry 4.0 automation technology applications.

3. RAIBA - Reconfigurable and Regulatable Battery Array System / Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)

The battery is among the most crucial parts of an electric vehicle. When the battery module of an electronic vehicle ages or breaks, the vehicle is damaged. RAIBA is a revolutionary technology that employs AI to dynamically reconfigure the array of the battery modules, enabling old and new batteries to be effectively integrated in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. This reduces energy waste and extends the battery system's cycle life.

- Reduces system decline by 51% and extends the operating time of the system by 90%.
- Can increase battery system stability and reduce operating costs by 45%.
- New and old battery modules can be integrated in the same power storage system, along with different types of batteries, such as lead-acid and lithium batteries.

4. DIFA - Air - jet weaving machine predicted for industrial weaving of 3D distance fabrics / Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI)

Globally unique machine that weaves fabrics into 3D structures, as opposed to originally flat or 2D forms. The machine employs a globally unique technology that surmounts the restrictions of constant pitch models currently available on the market, and can weave high pitch (12 to 50 cm) and high-density 3D-structured fabrics. There is a wide range of uses for such fabrics, for instance, in rescue ships, lifting jacks, building partition material, and buffer material.

5. Digital Twin Solutions for Smart Farming / Institute for Information Industry (III)

Digital Twin Solution for Smart Farming (DTSSF) is an innovative AI+HI digital twin service platform that aims to sustain farming expert knowledge for digital workforce transformation and increase overall production performance in agriculture and aquaculture industries. It assists farmers in extracting implicit knowledge from data and provides precise and comprehensive insights on the production process and asset status, which leads to better decision-making and operation strategies.
