Argentina is a leading wine producing nation, ranking fifth globally behind only Italy, Spain, France, and the United States. It is also a major exporter of wine, shipping more than 390 million liters abroad in 2020, for a 26.7% year-on-year increase and the highest level in the past 12 years.

Argentina exports wine to over 160 countries. The main markets for its bottled wine are the U.S., the U.K., Brazil, the Netherlands, Paraguay and Canada, while the top markets for its bulk wine are Spain, mainland China, Canada, the U.K., the U.S., and the Czech Republic, according to a report by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Argentina.

Production of wine in Argentina dates back to the early colonial period when the first vines were brought over from Spain. Today, the main cultivation area is the foothills along the Andes Mountains. The semi-arid climate gives Argentinian grapes a strong flavor, while the large daily temperature variations result in a good balance of sugars and acids.

Mendoza is the leading wine grape producing area, accounting for about 70% of the nation’s total production. Argentina’s flagship wine, Malbec, has an inky dark hue and emits a cranberry and violet fragrance; its medium acids and tannins also provide a full-bodied flavor and allow the wine to be easily preserved.

Argentina has a rich wine culture and significant domestic consumption. Several festivals are held around the country during the harvest period from late February to early March.

In 2020, amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, major wine producing countries such as Australia, Chile, France and Spain saw declines in their wine exports by volume and value. That Argentina was able to buck this trend is testament to the fact that its wine is internationally competitive both in terms of quality and price.
