Cocoa production in Nicaragua and Honduras

Taiwan’s Central American diplomatic allies Nicaragua and Honduras are both cocoa producing nations.
In 2019, Honduran cocoa product exports reached US$2.99 million, with the main markets being Switzerland, Costa Rica and the Netherlands. More than 7,000 hectares of land are under cocoa cultivation in the country.
Assistance is provided to farmers to expand production and take part in production and marketing under the Aprosacao project. The government also assists with promotion of Honduran cocoa through various initiatives. For example, in June 2019 the Ministry of Economic Development and the Copán Industry and Commerce Association invited micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to hold a cocoa carnival in the center of Copán City to promote the development of the local cocoa industry.

Nicaragua’s cocoa production reached 6,955 metric tons in 2019. More than 15,000 hectares of land are under cultivation in the country, mainly along the Caribbean coast.

At the 2019 International Chocolate Awards, Danish company Friis-Holm Chokolade’s products using Nicaraguan cocoa performed well, highlighting the high-quality of Nicaraguan cocoa products. The Nicaraguan cocoa producers’ association CANICACAO believes the quality of Nicaraguan cocoa is excellent and that efforts should be made to tap the premium chocolate markets of Europe and the U.S. to earn more foreign exchange.
