Taiwan Sugar Corporation (Taisugar) has raised pigs using the circular economy concept and has achieved outstanding results in promoting the resource utilization of livestock waste. The Dong Hai Feng Agricultural Circulation Park, Taisugar's representative green farm, was awarded the Silver Prize of the 6th National Enterprise Environmental Protection Award. Mr. Li-Jen Chen, President of Taisugar, attended the award ceremony on behalf of the company in the morning of June 6. He thanked the public for seeing Taisugar's efforts in transforming its animal breeding, and said that Taisugar will continue to adopt a new approach based on recycling and technology to raise pigs and to create a new value in the green industry.

According to Taisugar, The Dong Hai Feng Agricultural Circulation Park is not only the first livestock farm in Taiwan to integrate green energy, water recycling and biological circulation, but also the very first livestock farm that obtained the BS 8001 certification for circular economy. With the vision and goal of "Triple Zero" (Zero Waste, Zero Emission, and Zero Accident), the Park has been practicing emission reduction and deodorization, and has successfully reversed the image of pig farms as a bad neighbor. Using this park as a model, Taisugar will continue to promote the renovation of its 13 pig farms, leading Taiwan's pig breeding industry to transform and upgrade, and enhancing its net-zero sustainability competitiveness.

Taisugar pointed out that The Dong Hai Feng Agricultural Circulation Park is characterized by introducing a new type of negative air pressure pig house with cooling pad, temperature control, humidity control, disease control, built-in ventilation and deodorization, automatic feeding system, to realize smart management. The pig house is built on slatted floor with a scraper system, which greatly reduces the water used for cleaning the pig house by more than 75%. After the pig manure and urine are collected centrally, they are transported to the biogas center through closed pipelines. Through anaerobic digestion, the biogas produced can be used to generate electricity; the digestate obtained from the solid-liquid separation is added to the wood chips and the waste mushroom to make organic fertilizers; the anaerobic digestion residues go into the wastewater treatment system, where they can be recycled and reused for watering trees or for use in the garden area. Solar panels are installed on the roof of the pig house to help lower the temperature inside the house, while producing green electricity and reducing carbon emissions, thus accelerating the transformation of renewable energy in Taiwan.

Taisugar added that because The Dong Hai Feng Agricultural Circulation Park has multiple features including technology-based pig raising, waste-to-energy conversion, green energy and environmental education, so that Taisugar's 13 livestock farms will also take this as a standard to accelerate the modernization and reconstruction. Upon the completion of the renovation, Taisugar will lead pig raising in Taiwan into a new era. Taiwan Sugar has redefined pig raising with circular economy with modern equipment, hoping to set an example and inspire more relevant companies to invest in environmentally friendly pig breeding, improve efficiency, implement resource recycling, and promote the sustainable development of animal breeding in Taiwan.
