In response to the confirmation of an African Swine Fever(ASF)case in Taiwan on October 22, Taiwan Sugar Corporation(Taisugar)has immediately activated its highest-level biosecurity protocols across all its pig farms to strictly prevent the incursion and spread of the disease.
Taisugar emphasized that the company has a successful track record in containing ASF in the past and will leverage that experience to fully safeguard its pig population. The corporation stated it will strictly adhere to all directives issued by the Ministry of Agriculture(MOA)and will cooperate with the government's necessary food supply coordination to help stabilize domestic pork prices, if required.
The core of Taisugar's enhanced biosecurity plan focuses on comprehensive control measures for personnel and vehicles entering and exiting facilities. Key actions include:
(a) Strict Prohibition of Food Entry: Absolutely no food is permitted to enter the livestock housing areas.
(b) Centralized Waste Management: Post-meal kitchen waste is collected and processed uniformly to prevent wildlife from accessing and potentially contaminating feed.
(c) Feed and Water Safety: Ensuring the utmost safety and security of all water and feed provided to the pigs.
(d) Rigorous Disinfection: Regular, high-level disinfection of the environment and facilities across all farm sites.
Taisugar stressed the seriousness of ASF but expressed confidence in the nation's ability to contain it. With unified efforts between the government and industry operators, there is a strong opportunity to secure the safety of Taiwan's livestock industry.
Furthermore, Taisugar acknowledged the current relatively high market price for pork. The company affirmed its commitment to actively cooperate with government policies and meat supply adjustments to assist in stabilizing market prices.
