In response to the challenges of globalization, the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) under Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has been leveraging science and technology to forge Taiwan’s international competitiveness.

Since launching its first technology development program in 1974, the MOEA has laid the foundation for Taiwan’s rise as a global semiconductor leader and paving the way for the advent of the AI era. With government support, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) developed Taiwan’s first domestically produced personal computer, establishing the island as a computing powerhouse. Taiwan also achieved a major milestone in manufacturing by mass-producing the world’s first carbon fiber bicycle, successfully positioning Taiwan-made bicycles on the global stage.

Over the past four decades, DoIT has collaborated with institutions such as ITRI and the Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) to drive technological innovation and enhance the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These achievements have not only earned numerous international accolades but have also reinforced Taiwan’s leading position in the global tech landscape. At the same time, DoIT has extended the reach of innovative technologies to rural areas, fostering inclusive growth and shared prosperity.

Looking ahead, DoIT will continue to embrace cutting-edge technologies—including AI, low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, and 6G—to advance Taiwan’s semiconductor and telecommunications industries. By strengthening global partnerships and fostering international collaboration, DoIT is committed to steering Taiwan’s innovation and growth, further enhancing Taiwan’s global standing.
