遠距醫療的環境上,由於病患所需要的醫療設備不同加上專業技能不足,因此更需要隨插即用技術的協助,一般來說常見的隨插即用技術包含下面兩種:UPnP與 Jini。但大多數的醫療設備不支援UPnP或Jini的協定。即使醫療設備可以隨插即用,但是仍屬於該區域網路的範圍內,無法讓遠端的醫療院所擷取醫療設備的資訊,因此相關的分析軟體以及資料傳輸模組,仍須重新安裝及設定。另外UPnP和Jini被網路協定所限制了,不同的區域網路支援的協定是不一樣的。另外在醫療照護指引描述技術上有GLIF(GuideLine Interchange Format),是InterMed及多個機構所發展的一致流程。GLIF是基本於物件導向邏輯模型的概念,並且透過Stanford University所發展出的Ontology 編輯器  Protege來進行繪製描述流程。但都是屬於靜態的呈現,並沒有辦法形成動態連結訊息並監控實際應用的個體上。

In the telemedicine environment, the need for assistance from Plug-n-Play technologies is on the rise as patients need different medical devices and doctors lack professional skills. In general, UPnP and Jini are the 2 major types of plug and play technologies. But most medical devices do not support the protocols used by UPnP or Jini. Even if medical devices are available for plug and play, the medical devices are still subject to the Local Area Network and cannot let the remote hospitals to retrieve information fomr the medical devices. So, relevant analysis software and data transmission modules still need to be re-installed and set up. In addition, UPnP and Jini are limited by Internet protocols. Different local area networks would support different protocols. Also, the GLIF (GuideLine Interchange Format) is imposed on the technology for description of medical care guidance as a consistent process developed by InterMed and various organizations. GLIF is a basic concept for object-oriented logical models, and is described by Stange University's Ontology editor - Protege. However, all descriptions are static presentations and there is no way to form dynamic links or put them into actual practice in individual cases.
