In order to achieve Taiwan's 2050 net-zero transition goal, the Ministry of Economic Affairs organized the "2023 Electronic Information Industry Low-carbon Transformation and Sustainability Summit" on May 16th, 2023. The summit rallied the participation of Acer, Asus, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Microsoft, Foxconn, Quanta, Compal, Pegatron, Wistron, Inventec, Lite-On, Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA), Taipei Computer Association (TCA), and the Institute for Information Industry (III) to collectively pledge their commitment to carbon reduction and to drive Taiwan's continued pivotal role in the global ICT industry.

Deputy Minister Chuan-Neng Lin of the Ministry of Economic Affairs highlighted the global climate change and the subsequent adoption of carbon reduction policies by countries worldwide. Recognizing the significant impact of carbon rights and taxes on industries, the ministry's Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) is actively supporting Taiwan's electronic information industry, renowned for its technological prowess, to align with international carbon reduction trends. Collaborative efforts between major manufacturers and smaller enterprises in the supply chain are being promoted to reduce carbon emissions, with post-pandemic subsidies provided to accelerate energy-saving initiatives. These endeavors aim to create prominent examples of carbon reduction in supply chain.

The IDB of the Ministry of Economic Affairs has established a long-term cooperation with foreign businesses through the IPO Forum, encompassing areas such as technology R&D, procurement from Taiwan and innovative applications. Foreign members of the forum have actively responded to the government's carbon reduction policies, assisting supply chain partners, large leads small, in achieving their carbon reduction goals. IPO Forum Chairman Ren-xiang Liao mentioned that Taiwan's supply chain holds great significance for the global electronic information industry. As international partners investing in Taiwan, the foreign representatives of the IPO Forum will continue to collaborate with the government to support Taiwan's supply chain and industries, striving to achieve carbon reduction goals through innovative approaches.

Chairman Shi-qin Lee of the TEEMA and Honorary Chairman Zi-xian Tong of the TCA have expressed their commitment to supporting the Ministry of Economic Affairs' efforts in promoting industrial upgrading and transformation in Taiwan. The associations will fully cooperate with the initiative by advocating industry-specific carbon reduction guidelines, promoting carbon footprint assessment and guidance, data traceability, and efforts to reduce organizational or product carbon emissions. They will also guide members in adopting modern digital tools to plan and implement carbon reduction strategies, ensuring tangible carbon reduction benefits are realized throughout the sub-industry supply chain.

In response to the global net-zero agenda, international brand manufacturers and their supply chain partners have been setting phased carbon reduction targets for the period from 2030 to 2050, as part of their commitment to corporate social responsibility. In response, the IDB of the Ministry of Economic Affairs introduced the recently announced "Measures to Promote Industrial and SME Upgrading and Transformation" on the Industrial Competitiveness Development Center's website during the meeting. These measures aim to accelerate the low-carbon and smart upgrading transformation of the manufacturing industry by providing subsidies and assistance to relevant businesses. This initiative aims to expedite the low-carbon transformation of enterprises and enhance the international competitiveness of their products.
