Taiwan's Elite LEO Satellite Industry Seizes International Business Opportunities
The largest satellite exhibition in the world, SATELLITE 2023, was held in Washington, USA from March 14th to 16th. Over 350 companies from around the world, including SpaceX, OneWeb, Kuiper System, and Virgin Orbit, participated in the event. The Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the National Space Center under the National Science and Technology Center once again joined forces to lead 14 Taiwanese manufacturers to participate in the event, forming the "Taiwan Space Pavilion" to showcase the energy of Taiwan's space industry chain. The exhibition featured over 35 latest products, including satellite key components and materials, next-generation communication key modules and components, remote sensing payload subsystems, ground communication terminal equipment, and rapid measurement and calibration systems.
Over the past two years, the Industrial Development Bureau has supported companies to invest in low-earth-orbit satellite terminal equipment and key technology development through themed subsidy programs, including home, car, maritime, and aerospace satellite terminal equipment. Companies such as Tron Future, Rapidtek, Auden, Pyras Technology, Tmytek, and UMT have made specific breakthroughs in research and development. This exhibition showcased the terminal equipment system integration capabilities and demonstrated that Taiwanese manufacturers are moving towards high-value-added supply chain roles.
The Taiwanese manufacturers' products were showcased at the exhibition. In terms of satellite communication equipment, Tron Future released its latest mobile car satellite terminal equipment for the first time and demonstrated its latest synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and satellite communication payload solutions to seize the future market demand for large-scale terminal equipment and satellite communication payloads. Rapidtek targeted the commercial satellite market and showcased customizable phased array antennas and low-earth-orbit fixed terminal equipment. Pyras Technology, one of the few domestic companies with space flight experience, also launched an all-in-one maritime antenna system, ground remote sensing control base station, and satellite spiral antenna. This year, Tmytek unveiled a new type of millimeter-wave polarization chip antenna (Antenna on Chip, AoC) solution with low loss, high reliability, and durability, as well as an aerospace array antenna under development, showcasing Taiwan's abundant innovative technological energy.
In addition to showcasing the government's recent efforts to promote the space industry, many key component and subsystem manufacturers also exhibited their latest technology specification products at the satellite exhibition. These included Azure Shine International's VSAT, direct to home (DTH) antenna specifications, TAITIEN Electronics' satellite communication timing module, Transcom's millimeter-wave power amplifier, Wha Yu Industrial's satellite networking IoT technology, Liscotech System's advanced satellite image processing technology, ULinkSat Space Technology's mini-space high-speed data memory, Fair Power Technologies' multi-layer anti-radiation metal protective layer, and Fositek's satellite hinge. High-speed phase array antenna measurement and automatic calibration systems, such as Ohmplus Technology's 10x speed system, and radar RF antenna testing and calibration systems from Wavepro, should aid in the quick production and accurate testing of satellite products in the future.
During the exhibition, the Taiwan Pavilion also holds multiple one-on-one matchmaking events daily, arranging discussions and exchanges between several internationally renowned aerospace manufacturers such as OneWeb, Airbus, Kymeta, and Taiwanese manufacturers. The government will continue to assist the industry in expanding overseas marketing and promoting Taiwanese manufacturers to play more critical roles in the supply chain. Overall, the exhibition demonstrated Taiwan's leading position in the global satellite industry and its ability to provide high-value-added supply chain roles.
